I finally managed to find time to get into the city very early this morning to take some shots for this month’s Changing Seasons series. This photo challenge, initiated by blogging friend Cardinal Guzman, is about photographing our city each month to illustrate how it changes over the year. You can view my previous posts here for January, February, March and April.
For May I took my first shots around the usual starting point of Flinders Street Station and Federation Square and then walked up Collins Street taking more photos along the way.
Although we are well into Autumn the weather was not so cold, probably around 15 degrees. Despite the mild temperature some people were wearing their winter gear which in Melbourne is typically a coat, boots and scarf. The Plane trees that line many of the city streets are now almost bare with the leaves scattered over footpaths and filling the gutters waiting for a Council worker to come and sweep them up.
Autumn is my favourite time of the year in Melbourne and I really enjoyed walking the city streets taking this month’s shots.

Unfortunately not. We have some snow on the mountains but you have to drive about 3 hours to get there if you want to ski.

Beautiful gallery, and so different from the previous months. The light was gorgeous. Autumn has magic lights.

Thanks Lucile. I really love this time of year in Melbourne. You’re so right – the light is beautiful. In the middle of winter we get down to around 0 degrees at night and 8-10 during the day. Quite warm by your standards. We have snow on the mountains but they’re a 3-4 hour drive from Melbourne.

Yes it does get quite cold which I like. Desley Jane lives a lot further north than me so her temperatures are much warmer and more tropical.

On a totally different matter, I’m thinking about getting a new camera and like the look of the OMD which I think you and DesleyJane both have. Are you happy with it? Which model and lens do you have?

I’m totally in love with it. Cardinal just bought one too.
It’s lightweight and the quality is superior.
I have a E-M10 and my husband a E-M1. We use each other’s cameras and lenses.
We have these lenses:
14-42mm 3:5 to 5:6
12-40mm 2:8
45mm 1:8
60mm 2:8
With these lenses you double the mm. For example a 45mm is equivalent to 90mm.
Let me know if you have more questions. You won’t regret it.

Ah, I should tell you that there is a new one which is lighter like mine and is superb as well. The E-M5 new version. Cardinal bought this one.
The E-M1 is bulkier and heavier.

Great. Thanks. I might look at that one to start with. The camera I’ve been using is a very simple one so I need to get a good understanding of the different lenses. If you were to start with one extra lens which would it be?

No problem.
It depends on what you like doing.
I love the 45mm because I do portraits often, and that lens is a jewel.
The 60mm is a wonderful macro and a light tele. Because it’s equivalent to a 120mm DSLR.
Mine came with a standard 14-42mm and I guess that Cardinal got the same.
It’s a good one but I don’t like the aperture. I wouldn’t have bought us as first choice because of the aperture. Though is very small and light.
My husband got the 12-40mm which is heavier and bigger but has 2:8 aperture… Better than mine.
You need to choose based on what you like to shoot the most.

Which lens depends on the use.
Portraits, landscape, street photography, wild-life, flowers/macro?
Think about that before you buy an extra lens.
