The Changing Seasons – August

There was a hint of the Spring warmth to come last weekend when the temperature reached 17 degrees. Unfortunately today is back to being cold, damp and grey. This has been our chilliest winter for 17 years and I am definitely over it. Bring on Spring!

Despite the bad weather, I’ve managed to get out and take lots of photos for this month’s Changing Seasons series, including at a night photography class where I learnt how to use many of the settings on my new camera. I’m now feeling much more confident to permanently switch over to manual.

I’m posting some shots from the class which were taken around the Federation Square/Yarra River precinct I’ve featured each month. The remainder were taken around the city over the past few weeks, including at a marriage equality rally held at the State Library on the weekend. Same-sex marriage is a huge issue in Australia at the moment. We have a very conservative Prime Minister who is doing everything he can to prevent change, despite the polls indicating that 69 per cent of Australians support same-sex marriage. Hopefully the groundswell of public opinion and a looming election will see fairness and common sense prevail.

It’s time to get off my soapbox now. Here are this month’s photographs.

  1. Great photos Michelle, especially like the night ones. Fed Square and Yarra River are two very scenic spots of Melbourne.

    1. Thanks Julie. I must admit it’s pretty hard to take a bad photo there. Definitely worth braving the cold though. x

  2. A lot of fabulous photos here Michelle. I do like your night shots. I really need a course to help me understand how to use my new camera on manual settings. And 17 degrees is pretty much our summer temperature this year! I wish we were heading into spring…

    1. Thanks Jude. I’m really pleased you like this month’s photos. I’d definitely recommend a course. It’s really helped me understand how to work with the different levels of light.

      1. I shall look out for one. I sort of understand the theory, but struggle to interpret that into camera settings.

        1. That’s exactly what it felt like for me as well. I still have a lot more to learn but feel so much more confident working with speed, aperture and ISO.

  3. Michelle, what a fantastic gallery.
I started thinking of the ones I liked the most but ended up with them all. Each one is special. Some are simply brilliant. But you made a perfect selection and I want to do justice and say that you’re excelling each time and bringing only awe inspiring photos that make this habit of choosing the best just useless.
    Chapeau.

    1. Oh Lucile – you are always so generous with your feedback. Thank you! I’ve been in a bit of a photography rut of late and feel like I’m finally getting through it. Your praise means a lot to me. You’ve probably heard that Desley and I finally got together here in Melbourne but forgot to take a photo. We’ll definitely get one next time. It was so nice to finally meet face to face.

      1. Hi Michelle, I’m simply describing what I have observed and that has nothing to do with generosity, and just believe me, I think your photography is outstanding.
It’s fantastic to dedicate more time, invest in new equipment and courses, feeling good about that. Way to go!
I heard about the two of you! I was a bit jealous, and wanted to be there too, I waiting for this famous pic, and know that there will be more opportunities from now on. So no more forgetting!
Keep shooting and making us happy!
        Cheers!!

  6. Wonderful wonderful gallery Michelle. I love these shots. How amazing is the one of the lady on the motorbike. And I love that one of the guy taking a photo inside the building. But they are all so good. I can’t wait to join you on one of these night classes!
