2016 Changing Seasons – February

At the start of February I was confident I knew what the theme of this post would be as I’d planned to spend the month travelling to New York, Havana, Mexico City and Washington DC.

I arrived in New York on 1 February and had five great days exploring Greenpoint in Brooklyn where I was staying, and tripping over to Manhattan to visit some of my favourite neighbourhoods and sights. It was my seventh visit to New York City and I wanted to spend most of my time on the streets taking photographs.

On 5 February I received a call that changed everything. My daughter, at 29 weeks pregnant, required an emergency Caesarian. It was a very tense and worrying time, sitting in a hotel room in Brooklyn waiting to hear the outcome. Thankfully everything went well and we welcomed tiny Jack William Brereton into the world, weighing just 1.26kg. I  postponed the rest of my holiday and flew home the next day to be with them both.

So, instead of posting a photo from my trip, I’m showing off my first beautiful grandchild. He’s still so very tiny but steadily putting on weight, and has already given us so much joy.

You can also check out my New York photographs at City Streets.

  5. Oh Michelle, I was wondering why you were back so soon, I thought I had the dates wrong. Congratulations to you and your family, how precious is little Jack?! 😊😘

    1. Thanks DJ. He’s doing really well considering his early entrance. He’s steadily gaining weight and is now in an open cot. The next big step is to have him feeding without the tube.

      1. I’m glad to hear it. I had a friend with a little premmie. He was on a feeding tube for a long while but he was always so happy and accepting. He’s a gorgeous little kid and all sorted now 😊

  6. Congratulations and I hope the little one is doing well. My youngest grandson was born early, almost two years ago now, and weighed 1.2 kg too. It was a worrying time as they are in Australia and I am in England, but he kept gaining weight and eventually went home looking like a tiny doll in the car seat! He is still a wee boy, but at 22 months a proper little boy and now we await the arrival of his brother/sister who is due in May. Hopefully this one will remain inside a little longer!

    1. Thanks Jude. It’s always nice to hear positive stories like that of your grandson. How exciting to have another one on the way. Congratulations to you also!

      1. A day at a time. He even had to have a hernia operation when he was only a few weeks old, but coped very well. Fortunately although he was tiny, his lungs were fully developed so he didn’t have breathing problems. It’s still a worry seeing tubes and things when they are so very small.

  7. The sudden arrival of Jack is the best reason possible to have a disrupted holiday. I hope your daughter is OK and I’m glad all is well with bubs, and that he’s growing bigger and stronger by the day.

  11. Just looking through Cardinal’s choices and spotted this. 24 yrs ago my son was born 6 weeks early and spent 5 weeks in neo natal. Today is travelling around India with his girlfriend. How’s Jack doing now?

    1. Hi Mick. Baby Jack is now 11 months old and thriving. He has brought us all much joy. The Changing Seasons was a bit challenging at times because as you say it’s hard to show change here in Australia. However the Macedon Ranges might be interesting as you occasionally see snow. I did the CS for the entire year in 2015. I look forward to seeing what you come up with for 2017. Cheers, Michelle
