Weekly Photo Challenge – Intricate

During my recent visit to Macau I stumbled across Lou Kau Mansion, an old Chinese house which was open to the public. The mansion was built around 1889 and belonged to a wealthy merchant. These beautiful Intricate tiles were on the floor and looked like they’d been there since the house was constructed.

Old floor tiles always make me reflect on the lives of the people who’ve walked over them. What did they do each day? Did they have lots of visitors? Why are some tiles more worn than others? Did they any idea that their tiles would still be walked on over a century later?

  1. Beautiful and you’re right, thinking about the many feet that have passed over them is mind-boggling!

would be like walking on the tiles at The Baths in Bath, we often wondered who had walked them before us.

    1. Yes, you’re right. I remember thinking the same there too and in some of the ancient cathedrals around England.
