This photo was taken during a recent visit to the State Library of Victoria. The library, located in the centre of Melbourne, was built in 1859 and features a beautiful domed reading room. The dome was covered by a copper ceiling in 1959 because of a leaky roof and stayed that way for 44 years. Thankfully someone decided to uncover it during a $200 million restoration project that was completed in 2003. You can read more about the history of our state library at www.slv.vic.gov.au/search-discover/history-our-building.
This man caught my attention as he was writing and quietly contemplating in the domed reading room.
What a great subject for black and white. I love that he’s come to the library wearing a proper jacket. A true gentleman! Great photo.

Thanks! That’s what drew me to him. He really stood out amongst the others there. A distinguished gentleman in a beautiful old library.

I really like that building. Is it still accessible to the general public?

Yes it is, including the beautiful domed reading room. It’s on the corner of Swanston and LaTrobe Streets in the city.
